Evaluation:
This task was to recreate a 1-minute short film. We chose to recreate "Shutter", where a girl is taking photos in the forest, and when she receives the photos in the post, photos taken of her taking the photos have been included. This leads to the realisation that someone has been following her.
The main focus of mise-en-scene was setting, props and character expression & movement. As the recreation was filmed in school, we used the small tree area at the side of the field to try to recreate the forest setting, where the photographs were taken; and we used the school café to recreate the home setting where the envelope was opened. The camera itself is the main prop, and we also printed off the photos taken to go in an envelope. Finally, character expression & movement is important, as there is no dialogue; the facial expression at the end is the most important, as this is when the main character realises someone has been following them.
In terms of cinematography, we tried to replicate some of the shots, but the long shot we used was not taken as far away as we would have liked; this is due to filming on the field, where it was a smaller space with the trees being more sparse than the forest setting. Transitions and shot lengths are mostly the same, as we tried to keep the entire length of the film to the same run time as the original. When we filmed the scene opening the envelope, we increased the speed of the take during editing, so that it looked like the envelope was being opened faster - this also helped to drive forward narrative quicker, as the audience does not need to see a long take of the envelope being opened.
For sound, we added some music to the film, as we muted all audio tracks linked to the filming. We muted the audio as there was too much noise in the background; also dialogue is not included in the original which is another reason why we were able to mute the audio tracks. To improve the remake, we could add the camera shutter sounds when the camera clicks, as this was something included in the original that we didn't include in the remake.
